The size difference is the whole point

PNG stores photographs badly. Its compression is lossless, which is exactly right for screenshots, logos, and diagrams built from flat colour and hard edges, and exactly wrong for a picture full of gradients, skin tones, and sensor noise. A camera photo exported as PNG routinely lands somewhere between eight and twenty megabytes, while the same picture as a JPG at quality 85 is often under one megabyte with no difference anybody can see at normal viewing size.

That is why so many upload limits, attachment caps, and slow-loading galleries are solved by this single conversion. The one thing to watch is transparency: JPG has no alpha channel, so any see-through area has to be painted with a solid colour before encoding. If the PNG is a logo meant to sit on a coloured background, match the fill colour to that background — or keep the PNG and compress it instead of converting it.

    Add the PNG files

    Screenshots and exported graphics are usually PNG, and PNG is a poor fit for photographs: it stores every pixel exactly and the files get very large.

    Choose quality and fill colour

    Quality 80 typically cuts a photographic PNG by an order of magnitude with no visible difference. Transparent areas are flattened onto the fill colour you pick, because JPG cannot store transparency.

    Download the JPG

    This is the conversion to reach for when a page loads slowly or an upload form rejects the file size. For flat graphics and text screenshots, keep the PNG instead — JPG will smear the edges.

PNG to JPG questions

For photographs, usually eighty to ninety-five percent smaller. A twelve megabyte PNG photo commonly lands under one megabyte as a JPG at quality 85. For screenshots and flat graphics the saving is far smaller, and the JPG can even come out larger than the PNG.

They are filled with the colour you choose before the JPG is written, because JPG cannot store transparency at all. White is the default. Without a fill those pixels would come out black, which is the usual reason a converted logo looks broken somewhere else.

Yes, JPG is lossy by definition. In photographs the loss at quality 85 is invisible. In screenshots containing text it is very visible, because JPG smears coloured fringes around letters — keep those as PNG.

Keep PNG for screenshots with text, interface mockups, logos, line art, diagrams, and anything that needs a transparent background. Those are precisely the images PNG compresses well and JPG handles badly.

No. The pixel dimensions are unchanged unless the image is larger than 4096 pixels on its longest side, which is scaled down to stay inside browser canvas limits. Otherwise only the encoding changes.
